WHAT IS NATUROPATHY ?

Naturopathy is an integrative form of medicine that focuses on prevention, addressing the cause of the symptoms and promoting the natural healing properties of the body. Practitioners of naturopathy follow this philosophy of natural healing and addressing problems at the source as a combination of traditional medicine and modern science. A number of different therapies are chosen according to the needs of the individual, to treat both chronic and acute conditions.

The naturopathic approach to physical health and wellbeing follows a distinct set of values:

  • Do no harm:

use gentle methods to avoid further pain or damage

  • Holistic care:

treat the body and its connections as a whole

  • Address the condition at its core:

focus on eradicating the problem entirely instead of focusing on symptoms alone

  • Teach patients:

help the patient understand their body and select treatments on an individual basis

  • Natural Healing:

allow the body to heal itself through natural processes

  • Disease prevention:

treat the individual across all aspects of lifestyle to decrease the chance of developing any conditions or diseases in the future

Forms of naturopathy that may be used as part of your personalised treatment plan in Singapore include:

  • Homeopathy
  • Botanical medicine
  • Clinical nutrition
  • Physical medicine
  • Lifestyle counselling
  • Functional laboratory tests

EDUCATION REQUIRED TO PRACTICE NATUROPATHY

Prior to being accepted into a naturopathic medical school, a four-year undergraduate degree and all pre-medical sciences must be completed. After successful enrolment in any of North America’s seven naturopathic medical schools, the candidate undertakes education over four years which includes the basic medical interventions and sciences of orthopaedic examination, understanding imaging reports and laboratory values, completing minor surgical procedures, performing blood draws and learning alternative modalities. In the final two years of study, 1200 hours of clinical placement is required with health care professionals, satellite clinics and the school clinic. Health care professionals the individual is able to work with include nurses, chiropractors, NDs, MDs, paramedics and others.

To obtain an official license, the student must sit the two-phase NPLEX (Naturopathic Physician Licensing Exam):

  1. The first phase is undertaken upon completion of the second year of study and is focused on basic sciences
  2. The second phase is undertaken at the end of the fourth year to cover clinical cases

On top of the NPLEX, oral exams are conducted to assess the candidate on physical examinations, orthopaedic examinations and spinal adjustments. Ongoing education is required to keep the license valid.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST VISIT TO A NATUROPATHY

Your first naturopathy consultation at our Singapore clinic will last for a minimum of one hour. You and your doctor will go through the form that you filled out before your appointment and a number of questions will be asked to establish an understanding of your needs. The majority of your initial consultation will be a discussion with a general physical examination.

If your naturopathy practitioner feels that any laboratory tests are necessary, this will be suggested at the end of the appointment along with discussion over any follow up visits. If you have undertaken laboratory tests in the past, please bring these with you so that your doctor can gain a better understanding of your past and current condition.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR SECOND VISIT

Typically, your second session of naturopathy in Singapore at either of our two clinics will go for half an hour and involves discussion of the results from any laboratory tests that have been conducted. It will then be followed by setting goals and devising a treatment plan to work towards those goals.

If you require any treatments at our clinic, your doctor will provide you with those treatments and begin your treatment plan. The course of each plan varies on an individual basis, and may involve anything from a small number of short sessions to several consultations on a regular basis. In order to ensure you are working towards greater wellbeing with respect to your time and financial circumstances, your doctor will discuss a health budget with you. When you visit us for naturopathy in Singapore, we ensure everything is tailored to meet your needs as an individual.
